Trust. Something hard earned and easily lost, and we completely understand that letting a cleaner into your home or business for the first time, is a leap of faith.
Here are our top tips for finding a cleaner you can trust.
Step 1: Deciding cost over quality and reliability
Is your cleaner a company or a sole trader? A sole trader is a one-person band, often cheaper, but if they are ill, have childcare issues, go on holiday, forget to pay their insurance... these can all impact heavily on your service.
A company costs a bit more, but you should get better stability of service, a more robust standard of cleaning and an overall better and more professional service.
Step 2: Do your research
For a lot of people, simply finding a business on Facebook is enough. While Facebook is great, it is just one side of a public profile and can show a very limited perspective.
We recommend looking for a company website and a Trustpilot account. On this you should be able to check out who you are dealing with much more easily.
Does the cleaning company have a good reputation and are they building trust with their customers? A great company will usually have cleaning award.
A Trustpilot account is essential too, as it is an independent way of checking a companies verified, genuine reviews of real customers. Trustpilot is the gold standard, but many companies avoid it because if you get a bad review, you can't just delete it, like other platforms.
Step 3: Do they have good values?
A mission statement and values statement will tell you who you are really dealing with and that they are all about. Looking after their staff, working with charities, reducing carbon, reducing plastics are all things a responsible firm do.
It is very unfortunate that many cleaners are explained, working a hard and demanding job, often for less than minimum wage, due to travel and cost. Many employers do not pay the legal required holidays or SSP. An employer with accreditation to the National Living Wage Foundation is a sure sign that the cleaning company is going above and beyond to look after their people.
Step 4: Safety
This part is really boring... until something goes wrong. You don't need to be an expert on health and safety, but you should feel confident your cleaning company should be, especially if they clean for your business. Ask your cleaner about their HSE requirements, like Risk Assessments and COSHH. If you get a blank or confused look, you have your answer! Insurance and terms of business may not stand up if the company or individual doesn't meet the legal required standard.
